Summary: Just Juice is written by Newbery winning author Karen Hesse. The story follows young Juice Faulstich who doesn't really like going to, and would rather stay at home to comfort her father. Juice is the middle child of five girls. She was supposed to be in the fourth grade by now, but was held back in third. Juice's family is rather poor and her father hasn't held a job in quite sometime. One day they receive a note informing them that their house will be sold if they cannot pay off all their taxes. This is the first big real world probably Juice has ever faced. She now needs to support her father through this all whilst keeping this information from her mother. They have just about one year to recover their home.

Before Reading Activity
Before reading introduce some vocab words and possibly make a prediction sheet for the students. Before the students make their predictions, show them the book cover and the few illustrations in the book. Have them make predictions based on what they saw.
During Reading Activity
There will be problems that are present in the book. Have the students write down a problem that they hear during the reading. After each reading have the students share what problems they saw and how they would solve them.
After Reading Activity
This book can serve as a good introduction or small lesson social issues and how children are involved. Make a connection to the great depression and how a lot of families lost their homes. Ask the students how the children in the book handled sad news and try to make connections to history.

Have the students imagine being Juice in the story. They will have to describe what they would do if they were part of the family. What would it be like and how would you feel if you were in Juice's shoes?
